PRESS

"In the press notes Kelley says, “The play moves like a runaway train” — and indeed, the harbinging sound we hear is of a locomotive clattering through a gray, indistinct urban landscape. It’s the first of designer Jeff Gardner’s many stunning aural effects — one element of this technically tour-de-force production that includes Andrew Schmedake’s judicious lighting and Adam R. Macias’ video design, which conjures the falling snow and grim winter darkness through which the increasingly possessed Bigger must flee."

-Deborah Klugman, LA Weekly

"The production’s design elements are top notch and skillfully integrated. Adam R. Macia’s black and white videography bluntly accentuates the dichotomy of Bigger’s world (the snowfall evoked while Bigger is fleeing from the law is markedly effective). Edward E. Haynes Jr.’s set evokes a fittingly dismal multilevel cityscape, with a back wall that works efficiently to display Macia’s video images. Equally impressive is Jeff Gardner’s robust sound design and Andrew Schmedake’s clever lighting."

-Lovell Estell III, Stage Raw

"We see, hear and feel the soul of the city via projections of rumbling El trains, shifting shadows of towers and industrial noise. Rarely has the sound design of a dramatic play been as creatively integrated into the production as here. Compliments to sound designer Jeff Gardner. Lighting designer Andrew Schmedake also deserves credit for his skill at recreating the urban jungle at night, as well as managing the complexity of shifting visual emphasis that arise from Bigger’s ordeal, as well as from his memory."

-David Maurer, Culture Spot LA

"Edward E. Haynes, Jr.’s scenic design is foreboding, an excellent depiction of how Bigger perceives his life and times. With the aid of Andrew Schmedake’s lighting, Adam R. Macias’ video design, and Jeff Gardner’s sound, South Chicago becomes a haunted place, a place of rats and blizzards. Wendell C. Carmichael’s costumes add an air of authenticity to the time and place."
